March 5th 1984 – De Montfort Hall
Musically, this was a bit of a switch for me, or more likely an extension of the type of music I would listen to. Marillion were a mix of prog rock, pure rock and synth music. A real mixture which appealed to a wide range of fans, they also appalled many music critics who made comparison to Genesis, Peter Gabriel and even to the extent of plagiarism.
When you break down that Gabriel was shy and Fish outspoken and brash, whilst Phil Collins was an all together different sound, the lead singers were all different, so it was far fetched to go as far as plagiarism, the fact they fall into similar genres is rock the world over!

Marillion’s style of rock takes on board story telling and angst into the musical mix, throw in Fish’s penchant for a bit of make up (hence the Peter Gabriel compare), then you had an inspiring stage show to play alongside the music.
The setlist appears quite short compared to many bands, but I can assure you, you get a full 2 hours of concert, especially when tracks last for 10 minutes or so!!

Pendragon were the support band for this concert, another prog rock band, still touring now in 2019. Try listening to If I were the wind (and you were the rain) – a really nice and a bit long prog tune, but quite a difficult listen.
