November 23rd 1991 – Leicester University

I’ve no recollection of the support act. This concert was a follow on from being introduced to Steve Earle a few years earlier.
Nils Lofgren had always had a great reputation as a guitarist and singer, but I don’t think I ever knew he toured on his own, I knew he was integral to Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, but hadn’t thought of him alone…….
This gig was quite a surprise too, not listed on any tour dates we had seen and seriously, a member of “The E Street Band”…..at The Uni, give me a break! Turns out it was true and was a final gig before Nils headed back to America. It’s possible he was testing songs from his new album “Silver Lining” but I don’t remember too well how the gig went.
Nils was clearly a fantastic guitar player and in fact had the most ridiculous number of guitars I’d ever seen! I thought Roddy Frame had enough until now! He was a great singer too, but the sound wasn’t really for me, to bluesy and country.
Clearly the audience loved him and I would come to appreciate this more in later years, but I couldn’t fault the performance and an ace guitarist, a really good night out, just didn’t leave me wanting more.
Definitely a coup for Leicester University!
