November 4th 1985 – Thomas Cook Public House
This is a shout out to the local Leicester music scene and at the time, some guys we knew, not well, through musician friends, but it was the first time we would get close to a band trying to make it in the business.
Ultimately, they wouldn’t make it, but it was fun following them as they tried!
The importance of this gig was just seeing live music and watching the effort that goes into it. I was watching and playing a lot of football in these days and so many mistakes were made during a game by all players (including me). It was always amazing for me to watch musicians never seemingly making mistakes. Watching bands close up, you could see that they did, but it didn’t seem to matter in the same way….music was always uplifting. I really liked that.
Another local band around at the time was I2I actually released a single (Norton Street, I still have a copy) which was even more exciting.
So, I was by now totally fixed on music and loving live music even more than records. We hadn’t yet got to CDs either, so everything we were listening to was either on Vinyl or tape. I’ll write a page on the merits of these formats later.
This gig was the day before Midge Ure in Birmingham, so two nights out in a row wasn’t playing well with my dad……I was starting to realise the size of the world and wanted to enjoy it, quite possibly to the detriment of my education, but that could come later when I ever worked out why it was important and what I wanted to do! 🙂
