December 18th 1987 – Leicester Poly
Road trip!!! At least it was a Friday! I reckon in 1987 I would have had my Ford Cortina Mark 4, but I don’t think I drove to this one?
Somehow we squeezed 5 into a car, I think it was two fellas and three girls…….I feel like maybe we even had two full cars (my memory fails me).
Wet Wet Wet were huge! Only one album, “Popped in Souled Out”, but it had gone down soooo well, they were touring it straight away. The album was released in September 1987 and it was quite rare for albums to be massive hits straight away (as I recall?). The hits were flying off this album, first (and before the album was released) “Wishing I Was Lucky”, “Sweet Little Mystery” and “Angel Eyes”.
They were a poppy, soul band. Marti Pellow particularly appealing to the ladies, but a really nice pop sound and a bit different from what was around at the time. They sold out in Birmingham really quickly, hence the road trip to Sheffield. The bonus of Leicester is we were never far from anywhere. Sheffield about an hour and a half up the M1.
These guys were the slightly smarter Wham of the time, singing in great harmonies.
Wet Wet Wet were a Scottish band formed in 1982. The line up was Graeme Clark (bass, vocals), Tommy Cunningham (drums, vocals), Neil Mitchell (keyboards, piano, vocals) and Marti Pellow of lead vocals.
We had balcony seats about half way along and this was a real get up a dance concert where everyone was joining in. Not my usual gig, but I was developing an eclectic range of musical likes. Soft stuff like this, followed by heavy stuff another night was becoming the norm……never rule any style of music out completely.
A good concert where the tunes were played really well, I think I was expecting the band to go on to bigger more rockier sounds, but if anything, they went softer and off my radar.
