Black Sabbath – Headless Cross Tour – 1989

September 7th 1989 – De Montfort Hall

Funny old band, Black Sabbath…..you were never quite sure what the line up would be. Suffice it to say, for this tour, Ozzy Osbourne had been gone a while. Sort of didn’t matter, as this will always be Tony Iommi’s band.

So the line up for this tour was…Tony Iommi on lead guitar, Tony Martin as lead vocalist, and the legendary Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Whitesnake, etc.), Neil Murray on Bass and Geoff Nicholls on keyboards.

Cozy Powell was a legendary drummer and of course this would mean venturing into my non fave world of drum solos. It has to be said though, if you can’t enjoy a Cozy Powell drum solo, you really are missing something…..in the same way, Eddie Van Halen owns guitar and Jean Michel Jarre owns keyboards, Cozy was phenomenal on drums. That was one drum solo I enjoyed ;-).

A couple of tracks to open from the “Headless Cross” album and then onto some classics like “War Pigs”, “Black Sabbath” and “Iron Man”

A really strong, hard, violent set, with world class guitaring and Tony Martin’s vocals was just full of adrenaline and vicious….no need for Ozzy, this was spot on.

To finish, no surprises, straight into “Paranoid”, really well played, but maybe the only time we missed Ozzy’s vocals.

A really great performance, no Ozzy, Gillan or Dio….but you could never have seen them all anyway, so a cracking line up of star players was just great to see.
