Thunder – Backstreet Symphony Tour – 1990

September 7th 1990 – De Montfort Hall

Supported by No Sweat

This concert started with a fantastic support band, No Sweat. Another great Irish band that had come over in the late 80s early 90s. They were being hyped heavily as Joe Elliott (Def Leppard) was producing them. The also had a fantastic single out called “Heart and Soul”, which wasn’t a big hit in the UK but No.1 in Ireland.

Ultimately, these guys would break up in 1991 which was sad, as this was a great start to their UK gigs.

It’s worth listening to the great track “Heart and Soul” that they left us…

Thunder

Thunder are classed as an English hard rock band, but to me, there is also a definite pop element in the music.

Formed in 1989 in London, the group was founded by former Terraplane members Danny Bowes (lead vocals), Luke Morley (guitar, backing vocals) and Gary “Harry” James (drums), along with second guitarist and keyboardist Ben Matthews and bassist Mark “Snake” Luckhurst.

They were quite a light hearted bunch of lads, who enjoyed getting the crowd fully involved with their gig, whether that’s singing along, goading or (in Danny’s case), just having a right old gossip with them!

Opening with the title track of the album and tour, “Backstreet Symphony”, this started on such a high, with fantastic rhythm guitar and floating vocals from Danny, with a heavy melodic percussion throughout.

The band pretty much ploughed through there first and only album to date, which was just littered with hits and melodies. “Higher Ground”, “Low Life in High Places” and “An Englishman on Holiday” immediately struck you as long lasting songs. Ultimately finishing with “Dirty Love”, another great rock anthem.

One of my top gigs ever…….it would be only later in gig life, I’d like Danny to play a bit more music 😉

  1. it was an amazing concert.

    fantastic venue with great acoustics.

very special in my memory with the boys wearing long green wigs and santa hats. Some alcohol was consumed by the guy’s with a few antics, such as swapping instruments 😆😆💯🙌
