October 29th 1994 – Leicester University

It’s not often a band comes back to Leicester within a year, so they must be something right and must be keen to see us again. 🙂
Terrorvision played Leicester Uni earlier in the year, at the smaller room in the Pitt and were brilliant. The album “How To Make Friends And Influence People” had been a big success, so another tour was scheduled.
Baby Chaos
I remember watching these guys thinking, you don’t often get a good band third on the bill! They were a Scottish band and had such energy and a really good pop/rock/thrashy sound, it was surprising they weren’t already performing higher up bills. We really hoped these guys would make it, but they never quite seemed to get enough support.
Really good boisterous opening. We already knew a little bit about Die Toten Hosen, so we knew it was going to be a tough dancing night!!
Die Toten Hosen
I’m sure this would be something Geoff would have introduced me to. Die Toten Hosen were a German punk rock band originating from Düsseldorf, Germany.
Die Toten Hosen (what a terrific name) translates to “The Dead Trousers”, which in Germany is apparently referring to being boring or a bit droopy after beer 🙂 We certainly drank a bit of beer this night.
They had been around since the early 80s and done well in Germany, but less well known elsewhere (unless you were into your punk music!).
Wikipedia tells me they supporting U2 on their Zoo TV tour in Germany. Such a shame we didn’t get them in England where we got Stereo MCs, Björk!
Anyway, this gave them some much needed publicity. Obviously heard Kraftwerk on record, but I’d never heard a live German band actually sing in German so this was really exciting.
They opened with a brilliant version of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll (sure – you were allowed to talk about GG in those days).
This was a great mix of punk, rock and a touch of Germany and as “Wünsch DIR was” proved, the national rock chorus of “Whooa ho” translates into any language in a big manic crowd!
With a mix of great cover versions amongst their own songs, they went down really well and we all had a great pogo, there was a really great cover of “I Fought The Law”

Terrorvision
Normally after two bands we would be on our way home after a good night, but hang on, we still have Terrorvision to come, better have a drink of water, it was absolutely roasting.
Terrorvision came on all dressed in white shirts and black trousers (probably Tux, but can’t be sure), not your standard rock gear, but looked great on stage. So much energy came from them and particularly Tony Wright the lead singer..
A little nod to the Leicester crowd with the intro to Leicester’s finest (until Kasabian emerge), Showaddywaddy with “Under The Moon of Love”. Then we’re straight into “Discotheque Wreck”….those white shirts are going to suffer big time!
The set was most of what was played earlier in the year and some more, so everyone was very happy.
This gig was in October and I can’t recall a hotter, sweatier gig at the Uni than this? Maybe The Pogues but that was in the smaller room too. This night, being a Saturday, meant it turned into a long party in the student bar. A good night.
Yet again, a very sweaty gig, a few beers and another fantastic concert. One of the best nights.
