June 21st 2014 – Victoria Park, Leicester

This was a big deal…a very big deal.
Born and bred Leicester’s finest had returned home to play a gig after pretty much breaking the world with their music, but bands don’t play Victoria Park, they just don’t….so this was special!!
It was a bit of a reunion too, as around every corner we ran into someone else we knew. It was like the whole town had turned out for one big party (little did we know on this day, we would all be back for an even bigger party in 2016, where Kasabian would play something very apt!…Underdog)
A bit of background on the location. Victoria Park is one of the main open spaces in Leicester, in fact it is where we used to play our local Sunday League football, so made up of football and cricket pitches, walk ways and play areas…..it is right on the edge of the suburb Clarendon Park so surrounded by Victorian houses…..it doesn’t do concerts! But it did today 🙂
This was a great excuse to go back to the homeland, not least because I had just about sold my house (bachelor pad) in Countesthorpe, so had some final clearing out to do. Managed to get a few beers with friends in Clarendon Park, our old haunt The Clarendon and evening beers back in Blaby at The Bakers Arms (amongst others).
Not much to say about the support acts, fairly ordinary bland DJs and dancey stuff…..on to the main show!!
This was part of the 48:13 Tour and as such there was a rather garishpink screen counting down to the start of the concert, which somehow you were able to ignore until the inevitable 10 second countdown!….and then a further few seconds teasing before the boys made their triumphant entrance, Serge for some reason with some big black hands on, maybe a present from The Mighty Boosh?
Coming on to Shiva and then launching into Bumblebee and the crowd were away!
As the sun started to set a fantastic set continued with “Shoot The Runner”, “Underdog” and “Fast Fuse” before a few of my least favourite songs, which gave me a chance to catch up with a few people and get another beer and prepare for the inevitable pogo to the classics 🙂 Sadly could find everybody I wanted to on the day, it was packed but brilliant!
What a great welcome back to the city and a nod from your home town that you had done good!
We left happy and off to Blaby for a few more beers and a curry. There was always hope that Tom, Serge, Chris or Ian would join us in The Bulls Head, but I guess they had a better after show party to go to…lol.
