November 28th 1984 – Leicester University
I’m not sure if this was the “No Rest” or “Vengeance” Tour….I’ll investigate further, if I was to bet, I’d go for “Vengeance”. I’m afraid this is another gig where the ticket doesn’t exist anymore. I don’t think I understood the beauty of them for the early concerts.
New Model Army were a bit of a mix of rock, folk and pop. They had a very hard core following, very loyal and at this time, NMA offered season tickets for fans to go to all concerts. Their followers we new age travellers as well as us normal towns folk, so it was a great gig to be at.
The only downside I remember was this was the hardest mosh pit I would ever encounter (I write this on 10th December 2019 – I can assure you, there will be no more hard core moshing!). The travellers wore proper clogs and they blinking hurt!!! I don’t remember another time when we have decided to stop moshing through fear!!
The crowd was brilliant, they knew all the words and Justin Sullivan (lead singer) fully involved them. The crowd arm shapes and moves were almost choreographed.
Really enjoyable and this gig a day after Cabaret Voltaire was totally different and going to shape my music tastes for the future (with a few strange soft gigs too).
