April 19th 1986 – Leicester Poly
Cactus World News were an Irish band who had come to my attention through U2. Bono was producing them and i had got a free cassette tape, I think with Melody Maker featuring Worlds Apart and The Bridge.
The band sounded a bit like The Waterboys with a slightly more rocky edge, so that was the appeal to me.
I don’t think they were around for very long. I had the album Urban Beaches, which was pretty much what was played at this concert.
Sadly I remember very little of this concert. The Poly was one of my favourite venues at the time as it mixed a great student bar with live music and then a disco afterwards. I was never drunk during a concert as I didn’t see the point in it, but I’m sure I was afterwards!
