Clannad – Macalla Tour – 1986

February 25th 1986 – De Montfort Hall

Robin of Sherwood was a massive television hit at this time, with Jason Connery playing Robin (yep – Sean’s son). Clannad were an Irish folk band and were fast gaining a reputation for haunting classical Irish folk music.

They had already created the theme tune for Robin of Sherwood (The Hooded Man) and a few years before the extremely haunting theme for Harry’s Game.

Add to that a single, In a Lifetime, a collaboration with Bono from U2 and this folk band from Donegal was going places (oh and lead singer Moya Brennan’s sister is Enya!).

We used to watch Robin of Sherwood in the De Montfort pub and I remember one evening we had a 24 hour darts marathon and many of us coincided our half hour break with the show being on.

This was probably my first sit down and listen concert, a really enthralling concert and a strange mix of us early 20 year old listening because of Robin Hood and a whole older audience who had known of Clannad for many years.

This would be an experience that would teach me that no matter your taste, you are never too young or old to enjoy any type of music you want to.
