February 6th 1992 – Sheffield Poly
Now come on, tickets were generally around £7 to £10 for small gigs around this time and you had to be a big name to command a tenner, unless you had moved on to the arenas where it was £12 to £20!!!
So a £2 concert was a bargain, even having to travel to Sheffield to see it.
This tour was a warm up gig before the tour promoting their second album, “Stop the Machine”. We had previously been impressed with this band supporting Steve Earle and the Dukes.
This was a great venue, nice and compact, cheap beers, but flipping hot! There was an early realisation that the outside clothes we had on for February in Sheffield were high ineffective indoors in Sheffield! Sweating!!
I had been less impress with the second album, but the live show was superb and through my musical listening (at this point in time of nearly 10 years of live music) I’d now fully realised, I prefer live music to on record music.
Of the new tracks, I loved “Pain, Heartbreak and Redemption” which was a bluesy number and reminded my a bit of The Waterboys, “Three Days on the Tear” and “Slieveban Drive”
About this time, I felt my music had drifted to an area of safety and I was listening to the same old same old too much. I don’t think I did much about it concert wise for a while and I was generally drifting away from music in the mid 90s as I wasn’t finding much to inspire me. I’d also bought a house in 1991 and I was starting to feel the pinch, so there would be less concerts going forward for a while…….and maybe more experimentation on CDs.
