December 14th 1991 – De Montfort Hall
Always good to catch up with a band who you saw in a smaller town venue and then they move up the the big city gig! It was 1984 when I last saw New Model Army and I’m really quite surprised it was a 7 year gap between then and seeing them again. It wasn’t that I went off their music, but I guess other things were going on that took my fancy more.
New Model Army were always great live and Justin Sullivan was a phenomenal front man. Their hard core following were still in full force, but I guess now I was 7 years older and a little bit stronger (not much) they didn’t seem quite as daunting…..I also remember a lot of clogs present at the previous gig, less so this time, so maybe they mellowed a bit.
Straight on stage and into “Get Me Out” from the Impurity album got the dancing going
This was great mix of songs from their catalogue to an expectant and loyal crowd. I’m pretty sure I watch the whole gig from the balcony, I don’t think I bothered go down……but knowing me, I may have popped down for at least a few songs before venturing back to the comfort of a seat.
My only negative I recall from this gig, was that the venue didn’t really suit New Model Army. A low roof, sweaty venue was much more conducive to their rebel rousing.
