Terrorvision – How To Make Friends And Influence People Tour – 1994

April 27th 1994 – Leicester University

It’s very doubtful we saw the support this night, I feel sure we stayed in the Marquis of Wellington a bit longer than we meant to (but, hey, I have a long record of missing support bands!)

Terrorvision were a funny old band. They had been around since 1987 and yet we hadn’t heard of them until they released “My House” in late 1993, although I expect some of my friends probably bought the first album this song was on, “Formaldehyde” – That album pretty much past me by and I’d I’d revisit it later. The one I first bought was the title of this tour, “How To Make Friends And Influence People”‘ not your classic short rock album title.

They would become known for some great, catchy, rock numbers, which bordered on heavy rock but always had an underlying pop beat. The first song that got me was “Oblivion”, a brilliantly tuneful and catchy song with a chorus for the crowd to join in with very easily. Perfect for the lead singer, Tony Wright, to get in with the crowd…sometimes literally…..and Tony (from Yorkshire) felt like he’d taken lessons from Danny Bowes in Thunder on chatting to the crowd.

The band were: Tony Wright on Vocals, Mark Yates on Guitar, Leigh Marklew on Bass and David Ian “Shutty” Shuttleworth on Drums.

“Oblivion” came out end of March 1994 and was really popular, so we were very pleased we got our tickets before that, as all of a sudden, everyone wanted to go!

We were spoilt for a while with great venues in Leicester. The Queens Hall at the Uni was up there as a favourite place to watch a gig in Leicester. Compact, small capacity of 500 (although this ticket say no.650, I’m told sometimes they issued tickets from 501 to 1,000 as a security measure……I’ve no idea if that’s true or not!)

The opening 2 lines of “Alice What’s the Matter” act as a warm up, just to let you know Terrorvision are here and that you are now compelled to JUMP. A manic start to the set and we are already soaked in sweat! Love it!

Things calm down for a minute or two with “Stop the Bus” and then we’re off again, pogo here and there. Already we are tiring as is the rest of the crowd and you can feel sweaty bodies hanging on pretending to pogo, but in actual fact they’re faking it!!

We moved back a little bit at this point as you really weren’t getting a good pogo in the crowd, just in time for my fave song “Discotechque Wreck”….and back into the mix we go :-0 followed by “Oblivion”… fantastic!

During the night, they played most of “Formaldehyde” which was great, I’d go out and buy it after this concert….and the new tracks were sounding great too.

A very sweaty gig and another great concert. I’ll see Terrorvision a few more times yet……..
