What on earth was I going to this gig for? I can’t think of a reason for seeing either band unless someone else had said, you must come along to this gig……I hadn’t heard or bought anything by either band. I think looking at the bands and timeline it must have been Scott (or Dean)
Note the incorrect spelling of “De MontforT” on the ticket, the age old battle never goes away 😉
The Flaming Lips
An interesting start to the night, the music seemed very rough and almost made up as it went along….ahh…..this is art as well as music!!
Lead singer Wayne Coyne had a very soothing voice in some songs, but mixed it with an aggressive sound and some time deliberately out of tune singing, very strange…but not as strange as when he tipped theatrical blood over his face as part of the act (something I found out later he was renowned for)
A very strange and intriguing start to the night!

Mercury Rev
Mercury Rev had a nice sound, I guess I’d describe it as melodic, atmospheric and a bit psychedelic.
Well, I didn’t think I’d heard anything by this band, but it turned out I knew “Holes”. When I heard it I thought it was a Super Furry animals number, but turns out it’s a good song by these guys.
I was quite mesmerising and relaxing to watch this show and very enjoyable, lots of light action and sounds. Not something I would have gone to without coaxing, but a great edition to my music collection. If anything, The Flaming Lips were the one I responded to best and bought a couple of albums.
